The bottles we are uncorking today carry a gigantic name: Amarone. And to think that the story of this wine actually began by mistake, from a barrel of Recioto della Valpolicella “scampà” (which means ‘forgotten’ in the local Venetian dialect) by the cellarman. Since the wine thus continued to ferment in the barrel for much longer than intended, the Recioto’s sweet taste turned drier and more bitter, ‘amaro’ (hence the name) yet maintaining the body and long finish of a passito wine. From Quintarelli to Allegrini, here is the best selection of Amarones for you who know a thing or two about wine.
